Morning Legs

By Phil Griffiths

The red-bricked walls are growing thin,

with names carved in to city skin losing

layers, stripping back, the concrete slabs

and sandstone cracks…

Consistent haunts keep coming back,

and follow me down lines and paths

placed block-wise, un-refutably,

for students to live in, sub-standardly Continue reading

BLATANT RACISM IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY

BLACK IS the universal colour choice of fashion, but not of the people who run it.

In the midst of the progression of equality within the fashion industry, there is still powers which disrupt the positive developments. The real climate is often exposed through some sort of distasteful incident, or through someone revealing upsetting truths, after living beneath the industries weight.

Last week, Sundanese-Australian model Ajek Deng proclaimed her withdrawal from modelling due to the lack of respect she felt, noting “I am happy to announce that I am officially done with the fashion industry, I will be moving back to Australia in order to live the life I fully deserved. Which is real life.” A few days later, however, she has declared her return, announcing she refuses to give up the fight in addressing the inequalities black women face, and wishes to carry on inspiring those through her success as a black model. Women In Music

Some female artists do make it; lights in shining letters kind of make it. Beyoncé is one of these women, as well as being a feminist.

It is worth highlighting her excellent sample of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in ‘Flawless’ – what other $115million a year super star would takes these ‘controversial’ risks?

However, in all her female empowerment, when she came out with “Who run the world, GIRLS” she was lying. Just like pretty much everything else in our lives, men dominate music. In the UK, gals involved in the music industry represent a mere 32.2% according to  Creative & Cultural Skills and from a PRS for Music report, from their membership of over 95,000 songwriters and composers is only 13% are female.

Event organisers Gregory James Waller and Jenny Cook.

A Leeds-based collective raised over £1000 for Syrian refugee charities by coordinating a  fundraiser of ‘good vibes’.

The organisers saw the best way to raise money for Yorkshire Aid and Refugees Start, was to attract the local community to a day of music, art and poetry (14 February).

With a packed line up of northern artists and musicians volunteering to perform throughout the day, over 300 people came to the event which upheld a ‘pay as you feel’ policy at the Brudenell Social Club in Hyde Park, Leeds. Continue reading

ACTIVISTS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND ‘KNOW YOUR RIGHTS’ WORKSHOP

protest.jpg

Protesters march with flares in Sheffield 2011 against the coalition government’s austerity plans.

Before stating the motive of a demonstration, news reporters have usually unveiled the number of arrested protesters. This evocative topic regurgitates any previously circulated footage of police officers dragging activists into the back of armoured vans, immediately suggesting those arrested are lawbreakers.

Yet, the majority of the time those detained are never charged, which leaves room to question the purpose behind these empty but emotionally strenuous arrests. A Freedom of Information request from a member of the public shows that out of 221 arrested  during the London student protests in November and December 2010, only three people were charged. This overwhelmingly demonstrates that arrests are often unjustly made.

So how must it feel to attend your first protest and see yourself or fellow demonstrators end up in handcuffs?
