BLACK IS the universal colour choice of fashion, but not of the people who run it.
In the midst of the progression of equality within the fashion industry, there is still powers which disrupt the positive developments. The real climate is often exposed through some sort of distasteful incident, or through someone revealing upsetting truths, after living beneath the industries weight.
Last week, Sundanese-Australian model Ajek Deng proclaimed her withdrawal from modelling due to the lack of respect she felt, noting “I am happy to announce that I am officially done with the fashion industry, I will be moving back to Australia in order to live the life I fully deserved. Which is real life.” A few days later, however, she has declared her return, announcing she refuses to give up the fight in addressing the inequalities black women face, and wishes to carry on inspiring those through her success as a black model.
